Departmental Activity

The Department of Sanskrit at Harishchandrapur College is more than an academic unit. It introduced its B.A. General (Sanskrit) programme from the academic session 2009-10. Despite being situated in a rural and underprivileged area, the department has upheld a tradition of academic sincerity and cultural engagement. With a focus on bilingual instruction (Sanskrit and Bengali), the department strives to make ancient Indian wisdom accessible and relevant to the modern world. In the year 2023, it introduced B.A. Major programme in Sanskrit and Sanskrit was offered as Major/Minor subject for B.A.(Honours/General) degree following the curriculum as prescribed by the University of Gour Banga, aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020.Currently, the department offers-

  • 4-Year- B.A. (Honours/Honours & Research) In Sanskrit

  • Minor: Sanskrit

  • Multi-Disciplinary Course(MDC): Sanskrit

In line with the college’s broader mission and vision to provide holistic, multidisciplinary and inclusive education, the department continues to shape students into culturally grounded, intellectually curious, and ethically responsible citizens.

Mission

  1. To enable rural and underprivileged students to engage with and access ancient Indian wisdom through Sanskrit texts.
  2. To support the vision of the college by fostering equality, gender neutrality, inclusivity, and socio-cultural awareness.
  3. To preserve the Sanskrit language and its vast corpus of knowledge promoting scholarly inquiry through comparative studies with modern disciplines through digital technologies.
  4. To inspire students to engage with the Indian intellectual and cultural heritage by fostering linguistic proficiency and critical thinking in classical texts.
  5. To promote ethical and spiritual values derived from Indian philosophy, Sanskrit texts & scriptures among the students.
  6. To integrate Sanskrit education with interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary learning for contemporary relevance.

Vision

The Department aims to establish itself as a center of excellence in Sanskrit learning and research, rooted in India’s ancient wisdom, by nurturing academic excellence, leadership, lifelong learning ; inspiring ethical and value-based living; and fostering a spirit of inquiry and critical thinking through deep engagement with Sanskrit texts and commentaries.
